How to Choose a Mobility Scooter: Folding, 3-Wheel or 4-Wheel

The best mobility scooter is the one that fits the user's daily geography: doors, lifts, car boots and distances. Format first, then the table.

Mobility scooters fail their users in predictable ways: too wide for the bathroom door, too heavy to lift into the car, too slow to charge, or out of range before the day is done. All four failures are visible in a specification table before you buy. This guide uses the documented models on this site — the two four-wheel travel scooters on the mobility page (a separable-body folding model and an integrated-body travel model) and the 500W three-wheeler — to show what to compare.

Format 1: folding travel scooters (4-wheel)

Both documented four-wheel models are built for transport: 24V systems with two 12Ah lead-acid batteries, 360° leather seats, removable baskets, solid tyres (9-inch on the separable-body model, 7-inch on the integrated one) and speeds of 6–8 km/h. The headline difference is the body: the separable model splits for lifting and runs a 300W brush motor with a range of 28 km or more; the integrated model keeps a one-piece body, a 200W motor and a range of 18 km or more. For a user whose scooter travels by car, separable beats integrated; for a user whose scooter lives assembled, the simpler body and denser packing (210 units per 40HQ against 186) are worth money.

The shared figures are the daily-life figures: a 1.1m minimum turning radius (the number that decides indoor usability), a 12° maximum climbing slope, a 120 kg maximum loading, and an 8–10 hour charge on a 24V2A charger — overnight charging, in other words, which suits home use and argues for a spare-battery conversation in fleet and care settings.

Format 2: 3-wheel scooters

The documented three-wheeler is a different machine: a 500W/48V motor, a 48V20Ah battery, 25–35 km/h maximum speed, 40–60 km driving distance, a 150 kg maximum capacity, 15-degree climbing, and bicycle-scale wheels (16x3.0 front, 3.00-10 rear). It is faster, longer-ranged and more road-oriented than the travel scooters, with the three-wheel format's usual trade: a tighter turning feel and one less contact patch. Choose it for outdoor distance work, not for tight indoor manoeuvring; choose the four-wheel travel scooters for the reverse.

The checklist that decides it

Two final notes for importers and care buyers. First, colours and options are table items here — both travel models list red, blue, silver, black, white and grey, with child seat and rear mirror as options — so confirm them in the order, not from photographs. Second, certification paperwork for medical-adjacent products is market-specific: raise your market's documentation requirements in the inquiry. Certificates available upon request.

Assembly, spares and the second scooter

Two procurement details decide whether a mobility fleet stays in service. The first is transport: the separable-body model's main body comes apart (its table lists the body type as separable, against the travel model's integrated body), which favours it wherever a car boot is involved. The second is spares. The two tables list the same nominal battery format (24V, 2x12Ah lead-acid) and the same charger class (24V2A) — but nominal figures do not by themselves prove that batteries or chargers are physically interchangeable between the two models; dimensions and connectors are not stated in the tables. Confirm interchangeability with the factory before planning a shared spares stock; the tables are published so that everything they do state can be checked before money moves.

Finally, buy the second scooter into the plan. A user whose scooter is their mobility cannot wait for a part; care providers and rental fleets normally hold a float unit, and the container arithmetic on the mobility page (186–210 units per 40HQ) makes the float unit cheap at order time and expensive as an afterthought.

The one-line summary

Choose the format by geography — folding four-wheel travel scooters for indoor life and car transport, the three-wheeler for outdoor distance — then verify the six table figures (turning radius, range, loading, body type, tyres, charge time) against the user's real day. Every figure in this guide comes from the published tables of the documented models, and the same six checks work on any mobility scooter from any maker: if a model cannot answer them in print, it has not answered them at all, and it should not be bought on a photograph and a promise. That discipline — format first, figures second, and written confirmation wherever the table is silent — is the whole method of this guide, and it transfers unchanged to any maker's catalogue.
